Pyrolysis, catalysis or hydrolysis: which cleaning system should you choose for your oven?

Cleaning is an important factor when buying a new oven. Grease, splashes, and food residue can quickly accumulate on the walls, especially when the appliance is used several times a week.

To facilitate maintenance, manufacturers offer different systems: pyrolysis, catalysis, and hydrolysis. Each has its advantages, limitations, and level of efficiency.

Here's how to choose the most suitable system among the different built-in ovens .

How does pyrolytic cleaning work?

Pyrolysis uses a very high temperature to transform fats and food residues into ash.

During the program, the oven door locks automatically. Once the cycle is complete and the appliance has cooled down, it is usually sufficient to remove the ashes with a damp cloth.

The advantages of pyrolysis

Pyrolysis offers a particularly thorough cleaning:

  • It treats the walls and a large part of the cavity;

  • It eliminates heavily ingrained residues;

  • It reduces the use of cleaning products;

  • It requires little manual intervention.

It is particularly suitable for people who frequently use their oven to prepare roasts, gratins, pizzas or dishes that may produce splatters.

Constraints to be aware of

A pyrolysis cycle takes time and consumes electricity because it requires a very high temperature.

Before starting the program, you should also check whether the racks, trays, and telescopic rails can remain in the oven. This depends on the model. If in doubt, always consult the instruction manual.

To avoid excessive smoke and odors, remove large pieces of food and deposits before starting the cycle.

How does catalysis work?

A catalytic oven has porous walls designed to absorb and break down grease splatters during cooking, usually from a certain temperature.

So, part of the cleaning takes place while you're cooking.

The advantages of catalysis

Catalysis is valued for:

  • its automatic operation during cooking;

  • its cost is often lower than that of a pyrolytic oven;

  • its ease of use;

  • the absence of a very high temperature cycle.

It may be suitable for regular use when splashes remain moderate.

The limitations of catalysis

The catalytic panels do not always cover the entire cavity. The door, the base, and some corners still need to be cleaned manually.

Catalysis is also less effective against sugary spills or heavily ingrained residue. Over time, the panels may lose some of their effectiveness and need to be replaced.

What is hydrolytic cleaning?

Hydrolysis, sometimes called steam cleaning, uses water and moderate temperature to soften dirt.

Depending on the oven, you may need to pour a little water into the cavity or a designated area, then run a short program. The steam will gradually loosen the splatters, which can then be removed with a sponge or cloth.

The advantages of hydrolysis

This system has several advantages:

  • relatively short cycle;

  • slightly high temperature;

  • limited consumption;

  • Simplified regular maintenance;

  • purchase price often affordable.

Hydrolysis is suitable for people who clean their oven frequently, before grease becomes heavily encrusted.

Manual cleaning is still necessary

Unlike pyrolysis, hydrolysis does not turn residues into ash. It softens them to facilitate their removal.

Therefore, you should wipe the inside of the oven with a cloth after the program. If the appliance has not been cleaned for a long time, several cleanings may be necessary.

Which system should I choose?

Choose pyrolysis if…

  • You use your oven several times a week;

  • you regularly cook fatty or gratinéed dishes;

  • you want to reduce manual cleaning;

  • You prioritize ease of maintenance.

Choose catalysis if…

  • You are looking for a good compromise between price and simplicity;

  • your usage is regular, but moderate;

  • You agree to manually clean certain areas.

Choose hydrolysis if…

  • You clean your oven after a few uses;

  • You prefer a short, low-temperature cycle;

  • The soiling in your oven generally remains light.

Good habits for keeping your oven clean

Regardless of the system chosen, a few simple actions can help limit the accumulation of residue:

  • Wipe up any spills quickly when the oven is cold;

  • use a sufficiently large dish;

  • place food that might spill over onto a baking sheet;

  • avoid covering the walls with aluminum foil;

  • Clean the glass and seals regularly.

Seek advice before choosing your oven

The cleaning system should not be the only criterion. Also consider the cavity volume, the built-in dimensions, the cooking modes, the level of equipment and the ease of use.
